National Cancer Control Programme

The Czech National Cancer Control Programme (NOP) was developed in 2003, in accordance with the conditions and needs of the Czech Republic, and in compliance with the conclusions of WHO Consultation on Strategies to Improve and Strengthen Cancer Control Programmes in Europe, held on 25th-28th November 2003 in Geneva, Switzerland. The programme was developed by the representatives of the Czech Society for Oncology (CSO), the League Against Cancer and the Ministry of Health, and approved by the Board of the Czech Society for Oncology and the Scientific Council of the Ministry of Health.

It was concluded that, in the past years, the Czech Republic has been occupying unenviable leading positions in the incidence and mortality rates of selected cancer types, although the availability and quality of cancer care can withstand comparison to other developed countries.

Due to the ageing of the population in the Czech Republic, cancer incidence cases are expected to increase, thus constituting a major public health issue to tackle. Therefore, a set a complex of measures has been adopted, in order to moderate or stop the increase in cancer incidence, and in some cases even reverse the tendency. The National Cancer Control Programme also helps to improve the awareness of other countries about cancer health care in the Czech Republic and to spread the name of Czech oncology worldwide.
