Cervix: Cervical Screening Programme in the Czech Republic.

Beginning of the year 2009 is going to become a milestone in cervical cancer diagnosis and treatment in the Czech Republic, as the population-based screening programme will be officially launched on the 1st of January 2009.

Worldwide, cervical cancer is the second most common type of cancer in women. Cervical cancer incidence rates in the Czech Republic (20 cases per 100.000 women annually) are almost double that of European average. With the 2003 Council Recommendation on Cancer Screening, the European Union called on its member states to implement effective screening programmes for breast cancer, colon cancer and cervical cancer. As for the Czech Republic, population-based breast cancer and colon cancer screening programmes have already been running for several years now, whereas cervical cancer screening has not been implemented at the population level yet. This is going to be changed by the new project called "Cervix" which will be launched very soon.
